Sharaf al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Masʿūd b. Muḥammad al-Masʿūdī was a scholar of the twelfth century. He is sometimes referred to as al-Marwazī, al-Samarqandī, al-Bukhārī, and al-Ghaznawī alluding to his connections to Merv, Samarqand, Bukhara, and Ghazni. He also claimed descent from the notable Companion, ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd (d. 32/653). He was born in Merv to a family of Shāfiʿīs who worked in jurisprudence and associated with the Seljuk royal court. Al-Masʿūdī is said to have studied with Ibn Sahlān al-Sāwī (d. 450/1058). He was likely in Transoxiana during 549/1155. In 557/1162, he was working under the patronage of the Qarā Khānid dynasty, which was in power in Samarqand and Bukhara. He was in Bukhara by 582/1186, where he met and debated Fakhr al-Dīn Rāzī (d. 606/1210). In the latter part of his life, al-Masʿūdī returned to his hometown of Merv. He died at some point before 605/1208.
