Nāṣir al-Dīn ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Shīrāzī al-Bayżāwī (Bayḍāwī) was a scholar, judge, and exegete active during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. As his name indicates, he was born in Bayżā, near Shiraz. His father was a Shāfiʿī jurist. Bayżāwī received his early education in Baghdad before returning to Shiraz to study with his father, Imām al-Dīn (d. 673/1274-5), who was the chief judge (qāḍī al-quḍāt) of Shiraz. He also studied with a certain Sharaf al-Dīn ʿUmar b. Zakī Bushkānī (d. 680/1281). Bayḍāwī would eventually be appointed judge (qāḍī l-mamālik) by the Ilkhanid Abaqa Khan (r. 1265-1282). Bayḍāwī became chief judge (qāḍī al-quḍāt) of Shiraz after Abaqa’s death. The Ilkhanid khan Arghun (r. 1284-1291) appointed Bayḍāwī judge of his hometown Bayḍa, after which Bayḍāwī moved to Tabrīz. Bayżāwī was reportedly an associate and friend of Quṭb al-Shīrāzī (d. 710/1311). He composed manuals in the fields of exegesis, jurisprudence, and theology. His commentary on the Quran proved exceedingly popular and was used as a teaching text for exegetes across Muslim societies in Anatolia, Iran, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. He died in Tabriz at an uncertain date, variously given as 685/1286, 691/1292, 692/1293, 708/1308-9, after 710/1310-11, and 716/1316.
