Shiite scholar and mystic, the great synthesizer of Akbarian thought and Imāmī Shiism. He was born in Amul to a family descending from the Imām al-Ḥusayn. He began his studies in his hometown and continued them in Isfahan and Astarabad. Upon returning to Amul, he became a secretary and vizier in the service of the ruler of Tabaristan Fakhr al-Dawla Ḥasan ibn Kaykāwūs. He left the palace and gave himself to asceticism. He returned to Isfahan, following masters such as Nur al-Dīn al-Tahrānī. Later he performed the pilgrimage to Mecca and settled in Baghdad, where he studied with Hasan ibn Hamza l-Hashimi and and Fakhr al-Muhaqqiqin. He spent the last thirty years of his life in Najaf where he composed most of his works.
