Fakhr al-Dīn Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn al-Rāzī was a major Islamic theologian. Born in 543-4/1149 in Rayy, he began studying the Islamic sciences at an early age. His father, Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-Makkī, was the preacher (khaṭīb) of Rayy and a scholar of theology. He was Rāzī’s first teacher in Ashʿarī theology and Shāfiʿī law. Rāzī went on to study jurisprudence with Kamāl al-Dīn al-Simnānī (d. 1179-80) in Simnān, and philosophy with Majd al-Dīn al-Jīlī in Marāgha. He later settled in the eastern parts of the Islamic world, finding patronage with the Khwārazmshāhs. Rāzī is notable for assimilating aspects of Islamic Aristotelian philosophy, pioneered by Avicenna (d. 428/1037), into Islamic theology (ʿilm al-kalām). Several works attest to this far-reaching influence, though Rāzī remained in whole critical of Islamic Aristotelianism. His works were widely read and circulated in later centuries. Rāzī represents one of the most important voices in Islamic theology which scholars would study and debate. He died in 606/1210.
